Don't bother with reservations
Valentine's dinner at the Rock Salt was a disaster. The management and front counter staff left a black mark on what should have been a great evening out.

Knowing that the evening was likely to be busy, we made reservations. Rock Salt even called back that day to make sure we were comming. The lobby was mobbed when we arrived but we weren't worried because we had reservations. It turns out that they had "gotten behind" and were just putting people with reservations on the same list with walk ins. They said it would be a 25 miniute wait, but that turned into 45 before we were seated.

The wait staff was valiently trying to make the best of the situation, but by the time we were seated they were starting to run out of options on their specail fixed menu. So much for the lobster dinner I had promised my wife. They were also out of the chocolate dessert so we were left with a puff pastry that lacked puff.

It could have been worse, we weren't seated where they turned out the lights to start their dance club.

If you want to take a chance, you might have a nice evening. If you expect that reservations get you seated before walk ins, try a restaurant with competent management.    [17 Feb 2004 12:00:47]
