The dispicable and famished Cavalryman As the Cavalryman is an upperclass restaurant serving common fare at elevated prices, one should expect prompt service, delectable food, and charming environment. In fact, the commercial jingle happily anounces "...it's like stepping back in time." Unfortunately, the only aspect that could be construed as historical is the age of the food. The restaurant is actually a converted ranch house with a delapidated exterior and dimly lit dining room. The miniscule spaces between tables makes for difficult traveling to and from the near empty salad bar. Additionally, if a fellow has an imaginative mind, he can pretend he is waiting in line for a carnival ride rather than the meal ordered over an hour ago. Alas, when the house specialty, prime rib, finally arrives the consistancy is remeniscant of a Cavalryman's boots. The burnt medium rare "steak" is slightly warm and sparingly flavored. There's no alcoholism here as the mixed drinks are suspiciously without rum. After such a disappointing dining experience don't expect to receive more than a ten percent discount on a $110 price tag for four meals. The manager would rather call the police and accuse you of "ticket-skipping" than prescribe to the policy that the customer is always right. Rude and insulting with a tinge of hostility sums up the demeanor of the woman who could think of a hundred excuses for our bad expirience, but could provide no satisfaction. [16 Jul 2002 01:19:01]

Best way to eat $20. The restaurant charges $20 for a pretty impressive meal. Nice ambiance and an attentive waitstaff. I've sent quite a few people there (I work front desk at a hotel), and I haven't heard a bad thing yet. Quite a few of the people I send there say they loved it.
The outside is ugly, the parking is on a dirt road. And it's not in walking distance to anything. [24 Sep 2003 14:51:01]

The spoiled night out! We got all dressed up, and thought we'd go to a nice place for dinner. It was a Sunday night. We went to the Cavalryman expecting it to be one of the nicer places in Laramie. The inside of the place was quite dirty and dingy. It looked like it hadn't had a coat of paint on any part of it for many years. We could live with that if the food and the service was good. Considering the prices on the menu, we thought we'd be getting a real treat.
The salad bar was about half full, and they started cleaning it out and putting the food away at around 9:00 pm but they're open until 10:00pm. Our waitress came over and accidently dropped all the little unwrapped butter pads on the table. She picked them back up with her fingers and put them back in the little cup.
We could hear the music playing, it was some kind of Disco music. We both thought that ruined any type of atmosphere the place could have had. Our waitress asked me two or three times, if I was done with with my plate. It seemed as if she just wanted to get out of there early, but it was still and hour before closing time. We were served only two small slices of bread with our meal, I thought for the price we paid, we might get at least 4 slices, but it didn't matter because I could barely eat the one tough piece I tried.
Then came the biggest surprise. I told the waitress I would leave the tip in cash, she said OK. The rest of the bill went on a credit card. This morning when I checked my online bank account, I noticed they over charged me. The amount on my credit card slip is $49.18, but they had charged me $59.01. So, I left the tip in cash, and they took a hefty tip for themselves on top of that. Maybe they should change the name of the place to "The Highway Robberyman". [16 Aug 2004 10:54:44]

Great Meal for the Price I typically don't write restaurant reviews, but I ate there recently while on vacation with my wife, father-in-law, and daughter. The restaurant was recommended by a few locals we had met while in town. When we got there, we thought the prices seemed a little high, but when we learned that the salad and soup bar, drinks and dessert were included it made us feel a little more comfortable and we headed in.
My wife had the filet mignon, which she loved. My daughter and father-in-law ended up splitting the "General" which was tasty and more than enough for them both. I had the Prime Rib, which I enjoyed -- but I'd probably get the Filet or "General" if I return.
The wait staff was quite friendly, and the salad bar was well stocked during our visit (we arrived at around 8 p.m. on a Tuesday). Getting to choose from a variety of desserts all helped make it a fun family meal.
No...this place wasn't fancy or elegant, but being Floridians, we enjoyed the opportunity to see the elk, moose, and pronghorn trophies on the walls and the rest of the Western decorations.... I've travelled all over U.S., Canada, Europe and the Caribbean and have eaten at many fine restaurants over the years. If I ever return to Laramie, I plan on going back to the Cavalryman. Under new management - now excellent! Since coming under new management, my experience at The Cavalryman was excellent. The atmosphere, food and service were terrific. The meats were prepared and cooked perfectly. And the price was right! [11 Jul 2006 17:14:20]

Had a great meal this week Visited last Sunday night, had the field and stream -- bison steak and grilled trout.
Food was very good, service was great. The facilities are not the best, but the new owners say they're going to fix the place up soon (they say they've been spending their time and money making sure the food, drinks, and service was perfect -- and it shows).
The dishes come either "Enlisted"(w/ a side) or "Officer" style (w/ soup/salad/side/bread/dessert/coffee included).
Highly recommended. A classic rustic steakhouse. [12 Sep 2006 13:12:00]

No consistency I an new to Laramie and try to treat myself once a week to a nice meal. I have been eating every Sunday there for the last 3 months with a mix of satisfaction. This last Sunday was a new level in poor service and average food. I waited almost 5 minutes for the hostess to acknowledge me standing in the doorway, the place was not busy she was too preoccupied with the Superbowl on TV. She then sat me at a very small table jammed up against one of the other 2 tables of diners in the restaurant. I was able to move the table back to get the chair to quit rocking and some room to eat. While I waited for my meal I was bombarded with cigarette smoke coming from the (non-smoking) bar. I was trying to get the waitress's attention to move tables but the next time I saw her she had my meal and it was too late to move.
I always have my favorite dish the Lieutenant (steak and crab) The steak was alright but the crab was a 1/4lb short of the 1/2lb on the menu. I was hoping to get her attention but she never came back to see if everything was alright. I have just touched on some of the low points but overall my level of expectation and satisfaction based on previous experiences there was not achieved. I have had some fantastic meals here but inconsistency between the two chefs is very noticeable. I have to check who is working and make sure I order to their abilities. [05 Feb 2007 12:42:34]

Going Downhill The Cavalryman was a favorite restaurant for many years. Not so anymore. More expensive; redecorated, removed the Western flare. We ordered a bottle of Mondavi White Zinfandel and were told it would be in a CARAFE instead of a bottle! Reason: "we get it in large bottles." So, who is going to pay $21 for a CARAFE of wine which may not even be the wine listed on the menu! We ordered a glass ($6 each) instead. [08 Mar 2007 22:52:05]

Outstanding Dining Experience! The service, food, and ambiance are exceptional -- something we expect at the better Chicago restaurants, but were surprised to find in Laramie, WY!
They are expanding their wine selection and this will only add to the high quality of The Cavalryman dining experience. [13 Sep 2007 09:51:07]
