Description

In Bui Vien Street, one of the main avenues of the backpacker area. This place and its predecessors under the same name have operated out of various addresses over the years. They claim original Italian involvement, and the frontispiece of their menu makes much of this. But a lot has changed as it has Vietnamised. Nevertheless, they offer a range of Italian and international cuisine as well as local menu items. Prices are fairly cheap, as is to be expected in an eatery targetting low budget travellers.

not bad
This is one of the better low budget eateries in the backpacker area - my opinion.

Pizzas are quite good. Italian fare is recognisable even if Vietnamised somewhat.

Back in the early 90s it operated out of the CBD in one of the small streets off Dong Khoi. I think from blurred memory it was Ho Huan Nghiep. Then it made genuinely good Italian nosh; their lasagna was the best I had eaten anywhere.

But chefs move on, and things get localised under new management and Vietnamese cooking ideals. Somewhere in the mid-90s they moved to the backpacker precinct, first to De Tham and subsequently to their current location. The food quality declined in tandem with these moves.

Nevertheless, not to be too negative, I have eaten good pizza here, good soups and pasta that is not too bad.

Their chockie milk with bubbles - supposed to be chocolate milk shake - is a good tummy liner after a few days of too much booze.

Service is only fair, and you often have to wait long times for the attention of waitstaff, and for meal orders to appear.

Ambience is watching the world of budget travellers go by - as well as local happenings.    [19 Oct 2007 10:11:46]
