Fantastic Thai Surprise in Saigon I am a Thai food fanatic, and upon arriving in Saigon very rapidly got bored with the local fare. Naturally I sought out some Thai venues, of which Chao Thai was one. I have to say that the food was amongst the best I have ever tasted, the service was good and the atmosphere fantastic. I tried some of the other Thai restaurants and, although they were probably slightly cheaper, the quality was just not there. (Also I had a case of hot and cold sweats after eating at one around the corner from Chao Thai, which usually indicates liberal doses of MSG!) Chao Thai is excellent, I hope you enjoy it! Authentic Thai food and experience This place is an oasis when you're really hanging out for Thai food. Over the years many Thai restaurants have come and gone in Ho Chi Minh city, in others the food has migrated towards Vietnamese tastes, leaving this one head and shoulders winner in any "most authentic" category.
The quality is so high and everything runs like clockwork. I've never had any problems here. If anything I'd guess the service is rather mechanical, the staff give the impression of being very highly trained and as such do not betray an kind of individualism at all. The place operates so smoothly that I've yet to see how problems are dealt with.
The restaurant is decorated with a traditional Thai house in mind. The staff are attired in accordingly generic costume.
The most important factor is the food. It's spot on. I've only had minor issues with the green curry, which looked and tasted like it had got mixed up with a red curry. The salads? Okay, any regular visitor to restaurants in Vietnam will learn not to hold the salads up to such exacting standards and this restaurant is no exception.
Overall it's pleasant. If you're in need of good Thai food with decent but not over-attentive service this place will fill that need. It's also the place to go if you've got important business and you want to be sure that nothing is going to get in the way. The price is just a little above average and you get what you pay for.
