Folks around here are fond of saying that Queens NY (just across the East River from Manhattan) is the most ethnically diverse place on the planet. Well, I don't know that for sure, but according to the 1990 census it was the most ethnically diverse county in the USA. It also had the 9th largest population. It is my guess that when the dust settles on the y2000 census we will have confirmed that Queens is more diverse and lots bigger.

On my first stay in New York City in 1985, I was standing in line to see the movie "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" the 2nd day of its NYC opening. I overheard two men talking about Latin American restaurants and one of them raved about a Columbian place you could get to by riding the number 7 subway out to Queens. Somehow I got there the next day from my mental notes and I did enjoy my lunch and was curious about the area.

Little did I know that in '92 I would move to New York and that in 1997 I would move from Manhattan to Queens. In addition to Columbian, I now have Ecuadorian, Pakistani, Indian, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, Spanish, Argentinian, Bangla Deshi, Philipino, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Peruvian, Ecuadorian and Irish, as well as the omnipresent (in the US) Mexican and Chinese restaurants all within an easy 10 minute walk or train ride of my apartment. Bear in mind that in addition to the Mexican and Chinese restaurants there is a tortilla factory next to the post office and a Chinese grocery as large as a suburban supermarket in the neighborhood and I have probably left out more than a couple of choices.

I will try to develop our Queens page so you can have gastronomic examples and details.

Oh, in case you are wondering, my use of stranger in a strange land comes from my life on the internet which started in about 1993, and is not a comment about all this ethnic diversity I have been spouting off about.

My introduction to food beyond my mom's kitchen came while living in Texas (Amarillo, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio) and New Orleans, Louisiana. Most of my family still lives in New Orleans. One of my favorite neighborhood restaurants there was (I hope it is still there) a little Palestinian place on Carollton Avenue just off Canal.
